When thinking about just in few days, Cu Mong tunnel will be officially put into operation, engineer Do Van Linh – Deputy Director of Ham Mong Tunnel Project Management Board shared: “It was the happiness of all people who had dedicated to the Project, contributing to bring happiness to everyone. When working at Cu Mong tunnel project, every day witnessing the pitiful traffic accidental on the pass, I only hoped that the project would be completed sooner to contribute to reduce such accidents. Now that the tunnel was about to be put into operation, my wishes finally came true”.
Engineer Do Van Linh and the happiness of contributing to the miracle of Cu Mong
Mr. Do Van Linh is one of the engineers directly working at two big projects: Deo Ca Tunnel Project and Cu Mong Tunnel Project. He worked at Deo Ca Tunnel project for three years (2013-2016) from the implementation time to the completion time as Consulting and Supervision Manager (under A2Z unit belonging to Nippon koei- Apave- A2Z joint venture). After Deo Ca tunnel project was completed, he volunteered to participate in the construction of Cu Mong tunnel without any hesitation.
Remembering the early days of implementing Cu Mong tunnel project, Mr. Linh said, there were lots of shortages. There was no running water so, after working hours, people there brought each section of pipe to the top of Cu Mong pass to have water for using. He emphasized that the difficulties came not only from material conditions but also from employees’ spiritual conditions. Many people have negative thoughts that it was impossible to make the tunnel without using foreign labor in the construction, making people sometimes have sign of discouragement. But thanks to the encouragement, concern and timely guidance from the Board of Directors, the officers and employees directly working at Cu Mong overcome difficulties with the great aspiration that the Vietnamese people were qualified enough to apply NATM tunnel construction technology.
The tunnel construction under NATM technology – which is not new in the world but in Vietnam, only some big contractors such as Song Da, Vinavico, Lung Lo ... dare to try it. Mr. Linh shared: “It was undeniable that the experiences gained from big contractors, from international friends in the construction of Deo Ca Tunnel were largely applied in the construction of Cu Mong tunnel. However, the initiative and creativity in the management and construction are also one of the decisive factors for the current success”.
Mr. Linh is a counselor for the Board of Directors of the Group on recruitment of high quality professional staff from companies with experiences in tunnel construction and training the young generation in form of part time model. The experienced people both work and teach the new and young people ... as well as organize the operation machine from the implementation time to the completion time with the models as the projects of foreigners.
Apart from the promotion and mobilization of human resources meeting the work requirements, he bravely proposed the Management Board to apply the new technology applications, bringing back high efficiency in work such as: using spraying system for dust prevention, using alcohol content checking system to staff ... Investing internal telephones connecting inside and outside of the tunnel, making the information exchange in and out of the tunnel to be fast, timely and also reducing operating costs.

During the time of construction of Cu Mong tunnel, Mr. Linh never forgot the “miracle” of the tunnel makers when digging the first 100m of tunnel, with the complicated and difficult geological conditions and lacked manpower and machines (only 1/4 of the contractor in Deo Ca tunnel project), but it was completed within only 3 months. He emphasized that, with such workload, even for a professional contractor in this field, it took 5 months. This was also one of the factors helping Cu Mong tunnel project to be completed 3 months sooner compared to 31 March 2019 approved by the Ministry of Transport.
Through his stories, we know something more about his personal life. After six years of working for Deo Ca Group, he spends Tet holidays at the construction sites for 4 years. His family always supports, shares and supports him for him to feel secure in his work and dedicate to his work. There are also moments of feeling homesick, he wants to go home to spend Tet holidays with his family but with Mr. Linh – the person directly contributing to the achievements of two big projects: Deo Ca Tunnel and Cu Mong Tunnel, he is willing to cede his happiness with his family to the workers because it is time for them to compensate for the exhausting days at the construction site.
Looking at the tunnel pipe that are ready to be put into operation, connecting the two ends of Phu Yen, Binh Dinh, Mr. Linh cannot hide his happiness. For him, this success is another miracle of Deo Ca Group and Mr. Linh is proud to be a member of Deo Ca Group.
