Editor’s Notes: This spring, the road tunnel project through Cu Mong Pass will be put into operation, removing the traffic bottlenecks of Phu Yen - Binh Dinh Provinces in particular and the whole country in general. There are individuals working hard at the construction site, contributing to this great project, nobody knows it. Their stories will be introduced one by one on the website deoca.vn

“Tet is not coming soon, the tunnel worker’ hearts have been more bustling than Tet” was a feeling of young Engineer Bui Hong Dang in the moment of detonating the last mine to make breakthrough of Cu Mong tunnel on January 16th, 2018. “After the explosion, a through tunnel appeared, its data showed the absolute accuracy with an error on both sides was only 1cm apart. It was truly unbelievable but it was reality,” Mr. Dang recalled.

Only 15 days later, on February 3rd, the western tunnel was completed. The tunnel breakthrough has exceeded the committed schedule with the Ministry of Transport for 2 months.

On the last days of November, on the construction site of Cu Mong Pass Tunnel, the construction contractors are rushing against the clock to complete the final items to bring the project to the finish on schedule. As planned, the road tunnel through Cu Mong pass will be put into operation before the Pig of Lunar New Year 2019.

“For so long, the only road around the side of Cu Mong pass connecting the two provinces of Binh Dinh - Phu Yen had associated with the terrible and heart-rending traffic accident stories. Now, prior to the preparation moment of tunnel breakthrough, hardships in the travelling of people of the two provinces of Binh Dinh and Phu Yen in particular and the expansion of the North-South thousand miles of road in general will be overcome,” Engineer Bui Hong Dang did not hide his joy, he said.

If his position is not introduced, it is difficult for a newcomer to recognize this engineer who is the CEO of the tunnel package of Deoca Group, Mr. Bui Hong Dang, in a protective clothing only without cool suit and tie, together with his workers directly go to the tunnel.

Eng. Bui Hong Dang

Mr. Dang is a good-natured appearance, few words, ready smile, few people know that he is a true “General of Battlefield”. Assoc. Prof. Ph.D Tran Chung, Standing Vice Chairman of the Senior Advisory Council of the Group, told me: “Mr. Dang is a good expert and creativities at work. If making a summary document of Vietnamese as mastering of tunneling technology, Mr. Dang would take part in contribution of his opinion”.

During the lunch time at the refectory for officials and staff of the Cu Mong Road Tunnel Project, Mr. Dang told me: “I came from Deoca and Co Ma passes to Cu Mong pass and after Cu Mong completed, I’m going to Hai Van 2”. So this engineer has been present at the key projects of Ca pass since the first days.

Assoc. Prof. Ph.D Tran Chung‘s compliment was retold to Mr. Dang, he smiled, “It is the achievement of the collective. It should be said that, from the experience of learning from foreign experts, through the supervision consulting and construction of Hai Van I tunnel, and then directly drill the tunnel of Ca pass (4,200 m), Co Ma pass (500 m) and including self-study, self-research through documents, our team of engineers and workers (Deoca Group) have experienced in the NATM tunnel drilling technology, reached the high international level”, he said.

This is evidenced by the 2,600m-long Cu Mong Pass tunnel, which is drilled with two parallel tunnel pipes with a height of 8.3m and a width of 10.5m. All forces from the supervision consulting to works construction are Vietnamese. Each tunnel pipe was drilled at the same time from both ends, the two construction sides could not see each other, but when closure, a difference is just 1cm apart, while the tunneling speed is 100-150m per month, sometimes reached 237.5m per month, achieved the international tunnel drilling level.

Engineer Bui Hong Dang (3rd person from left to right) during the progress inspection trip of Cu Mong Tunnel by Chairman Ho Minh Hoang in November 2018

This engineer born in 1980 is officially a member of Deoca Group when he was a resident engineer (working for Supervision Consultant) for the Deoca Tunnel Project. At that time, Deoca item was under the completion phase.

Mr. Dang said that what made him to want to become a member of the Deoca Home is a desirableness to master the NATM tunneling technology of the head of the Group. This is a new industry, it takes a very long preparation process for other units (from finance, human resource, technology, machinery, equipment, etc.)

The working environment in Deoca which is different from other businesses is an aspiration from the leaders to the staff, it is as good as our word (doing very drastically) and resulting a lot of guaranteed works in safety, quality and progress (always on schedule).

Assigned in Hai Van II project, it is the most important for him, is the belief in the young generation of Chairman Ho Minh Hoang as well as all leadership of the Group.

Mr. Dang shared: “My family is in Gia Lam, Hanoi. A little disadvantage of geographical distance makes husband, wife and children not often living together. Because of a construction site citizen, I have to overcome such obstacle. Furthermore, I am lucky to get sympathy, support and encouragement from my family”.

In the recent progress inspection of the Cu Mong Pass tunnel project, Chairman Ho Minh Hoang mentioned the story that the Group will move to the North of the country to continue construction of works serving people and the country. Mr. Dang said that he would be willing to accept any task if assigned.
