Currently, the drought – salinization in the Mekong Delta is very severe. The over 2‰salinity water has penetrated deep into the Tien River, overflowing into Cai Be district, Tien Giang province. Trung Luong - My Thuan Expressway construction passing through districts of Chau Thanh, Cai Lay, Cai Lay town, Tan Phuoc, Cai Be, (Tien Giang province) is facing many difficulties. Especially the materials barges supply for Trung Luong – My Thuan project must transport by road or other route because the waterway was blocked when Tien Giang province built a steel dam to prevent instrusion across Nguyen Tan Thanh canal (in Binh Duc commune, Chau Thanh district), causing additional expenses.
The bid packages of Trung Luong - My Thuan Expressway project are still being constructed urgently.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Hieu, owner of Kim Hung Phat company (in Long Dinh commune, Chau Thanh district, Tien Giang) - the material supplier for the expressway project said: “Due to the closure of the Nguyen Tan Thanh Canal, the transport on Tien River is blocked so we have to transport by road, the arising cost is VND 70 million per day. If this situation continues to prolong, material supply for expressway project will be very difficult”.
