With the current work progress, around this september the project of expanding Hai Van 2 tunnel (construction of tunnel 2 and leading roads) will be completed and put into operation and exploitation, nearly 4 months early than the schedule approved by MOT.

Mr. Pham Thanh Ha, Hai Van Tunnel Project Management Unit, said that all bid packages: tunnel construction; bridges and leading roads; mechanical and electrical installation has completed from 90-95% of the workload.
Currently, the remaining major workload of the bid package is M&E. “Equipment has been gathered at the construction more than 80%, the rest is the installation, test commissioning and finishing” - Mr. Ha said. According to Mr. Ha, the total project progress is nearly 4 months early than the completion schedule on December 31, 2020 approved by the Ministry of Transport.
In April 2016, the Ministry of Transport (MOT) agreed with Deo Ca Joint Stock Company to deploy Hai Van 2 tunnel project (in parallel with Hai Van 1).
The project of expanding Hai Van tunnel approved in 2016 by the Ministry of Transport in two phases, with a total investment of more than VND 7,200 billion. In phase 1, repair and upgrade the existing Hai Van tunnel (Hai Van 1 tunnel) and renovate the National Road 1 section through Hai Van Pass.
In phase 2, expand and turn the existing evacuation tunnel into a traffic tunnel (Hai Van 2 tunnel) with 4 lanes and expand bridges and leading roads with a scale of 4 lanes as well, the expected operation the entire route is by the end of 2020.
Hai Van 2 is designed with two tunnels of 9.7m wide with one direction, each of which ensures 2 lanes with 7m wide, 1m wide for pedestrian and maintenance roads, two safety bands is 1.5m. In addition, the project also has rescue center items, fire protection, toll stations and technical station. Hai Van is the longest road tunnel in the country, in which, the north leading road is about 1.7 km long, the tunnel is 6.2 km long, the southern leading road is 4 km.
