The last drill to break through Hai Van 2 tunnel had finishes. Road tunnel connecting Thua Thien – Hue and Da Nang construction valued 7,200 billion with technologies completely managed by Vietnamese.
In order to reduce pressure for Hai Van 1 tunnel, on April 2016, Transport Ministry leadership agreed for Deoca Joint Stock Company to implement Hai Van 2 road tunnel project (along with Hai Van 1).
Mr. Nguyen Tan Dong, Deoca Joint Stock Company Vice Chairman of the Board stated that at the beginning of recent October, the last drills had broken through Hai Van 2 tunnel. “Tunnel breakthrough marks a highlight of transportation sector as this is the longest road tunnel construction of South East Asia with construction technology completely managed by Vietnamese”, said Mr. Dong.
Other categories under construction include tunnel segment, road surface foundation, water drainage system, …
“On Hai Van 2 tunnel construction, we are mobilizing many construction points, working in 3 shifts around the clock to complete project on schedule at the end of 2020”, shared Mr. Dong.
North of Hai Van tunnel, route connecting Lang Co Town (Thua Thien – Hue Province) and bridges had also finished more than 95% work quantity.
Hai Van bidding package, construction unit completed beam casting, bored pile, abutment. At the present, construction unit has finished 23/26 span beams.
“In comparison to the plan of Transport Ministry, we have passed the schedule more than 2 months. Putting into Hai Van 2 tunnel operation and at the end of 2020 is possible”, said Mr. Dong.
Workers were urgently finishing remaining categories at bridges in North and South tunnel connecting route.

“In 2020, Hai Van 2 tunnel is put into operation, which will reduce pressure of Hai Van 1, at the same time decreasing traffic time for vehicles, improving goods, passengers transport efficiency”, informed Mr. Dong. Hai Van road tunnel extension project approved by Transport Ministry in 2016 including 2 phases, with total investment more than 7,200 billion VND. Phase 1 would repair, upgrade existing Hai Van tunnel (Hai Van 1 tunnel) and reform National Highway 1 route passing through Hai Van mountain pass.
Phase 2 would extend existing refuge tunnel to become transportation tunnel (Hai Van 2 tunnel) with the scope of 4 vehicle lines and extend bridges, connecting routes with scope of 4 vehicles lines, whole route was expected to be put into operation at the end of 2020.
Hai Van 2 was designed two tunnels with the width of 9.7 m for vehicle in one direction, each tunnel shall guarantee 2 lines with the width of 7 m, walkway and maintenance way with the width of 1 m, two 1.5 m median strips … In addition to that, project also had categories of rescue, fire prevention and firefighting center, toll booth; technical station stop.
Hai Van is the longest road tunnel nationally, North route’s length is approximately 1.7 km, tunnel internal route’s length is 6.2 km, South route is 4 km.
