On January 17, 2025, the Tuy An Tunnel, which is 1,020 meters long and part of the XL01 package of the Chi Thanh - Van Phong Expressway project, was officially completed with both tunnel tubes fully excavated.
According to a report from the XL01 package management board, the contractor consortium mobilized 806 personnel, 505 pieces of machinery and equipment, and implemented 40 construction fronts across the entire route. The total progress of the package has reached 72%. Specifically, for the scope of work undertaken by DEOCA Group, the completed progress has reached 68%, exceeding the planned target by 8%.
For Tuy An Tunnel section, which is 1,020 meters long, both tunnel tubes have now been officially excavated, with the left tunnel being completed by the contractor a month ago. To achieve this milestone, the team of engineers and workers overcame numerous challenges, particularly related to the geological conditions, achieving an average excavation rate of 2 meters per day.

Mr. Truong Cong Dat, Director of the XL01 package Management Board, stated that Tuy An Tunnel construction faced significant challenges due to complex geological conditions. According to the initial design, the tunnel was expected to pass through hard rock layers. However, in reality, the geology of the area mainly consisted of clay, weathered rock, sand, and groundwater. This difference not only increased the difficulty of the construction but also caused the excavation speed to decrease from an average of 6-8 meters per day to only 0.5-1 meter per day.
In response to these difficulties, the Management Board, along with related units, quickly adjusted the construction plan, addressed emerging issues, and completed the approval documentation. Close coordination between the contractor, the supervision consultant, and the Project Management Board ensured the financial resources and project schedule were maintained. Thanks to the tireless efforts of the engineering and construction teams, the overall project progress has exceeded the planned target by 8%.
"The completion of Tuy An Tunnel excavation, particularly under challenging geological conditions, demonstrates the determination and responsibility of the entire project team. This is a significant milestone that contributes to accelerating the progress of the entire Chi Thanh - Van Phong expressway," Mr. Dat affirmed.
Immediately after both tunnel branches are opened, the engineering and construction teams will proceed with the next steps, including lowering the foundation, reinforcement, installing formwork for concrete lining, and setting up the ITS equipment. Additionally, Tuy An Tunnel will be utilized as a service road, shortening transport times and material coordination across the entire route, which will help expedite the overall project timeline.
