Exactly two years ago on April 12, 2018, at the North entrance of the tunnel through Ca pass (Hoa Xuan Nam Commune, Dong Hoa District, Phu Yen province), Ministry of Construction, Ministry of Transport, Phu Yen Province coordinated with Deo Ca Investment Joint Stock Company held a ceremony to give honor title typical project to celebrate 60 years of the Traditional Day of Vietnam Construction Industry (April 29, 1958 - April 29, 2018) for Deo Ca Tunnel.

It is an important milestone, confirming the name Deo Ca on the map of Vietnam's transport infrastructure.

Serving 5.5 million vehicles

In order to be selected to attach typical project title, the tunnel project through Ca Pass has to pass the examination and meet the selection criteria of the construction industry in terms of scale, quality, and significance for the national development, etc.

Mr. Le Quang Hung, Deputy Minister of Construction affirmed: “This is a recognition of a project with many advantages such as completely using domestic capital, invested and constructed entirely by Vietnamese resource and brainpower”.

On April 11, 2020, Mr. Le Chau Thang - Director of the Operation Management Factory of Deo Ca Tunnel said: “From the date of operation (August 21, 2017), Deo Ca Tunnel has served for nearly 5.5 million vehicles”.

In the statistics shared by Mr. Le Chau Thang, there is remarkable detail that during the same period, there are only 603,600 vehicles passing on mountain pass road, accounting for only 11.9% of the vehicles passing the tunnel. That's enough to say about the importance of Deo Ca tunnel.

Overlooking the South Central region, in less than 3 years (July 2016 - January 2019), the nature pincer of Ca and Cu Mong mountains were in turn broken, Phu Yen awakens after a long sleep, becoming a push for socio-economic development in the South Central region, becoming a pride of Vietnamese people when successfully implementing a superlative modern mountain-tunnel system in the area.

The “Mourning on cliffs” have retreated to the past

Along the journey to cross Ca mountain, I was told by Mr. Phan Xuan Luat - Director of Phu Yen Radio and Television Station, a native of Nghe An but very thorough in the culture of the South Central region: “Since ancient times, in daily life stories, Cham people in the great Vietnamese family residing here have dreamed of a tunnel through Ca mountain”. The thousand-year-old aspiration of the Cham people about the road through the mountain thought only forever in fairy tales, vague and unrealistic.

No need for far-fetched examples, only about 10 years ago, no one believes that the road through Ca mountain is realized so soon.

Catastrophic traffic accidents are constantly occurring, turning the Ca and Cu Mong pass roads into a danger place, the traffic forces of Binh Dinh, Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa traffic has dotted dozens of “accidental black spots” at each pass. However, there were times when no one called “the black spot” anymore, not because it was less dangerous but because there were potential accidents on all part of the pass.

Mr. Nguyen Van Lim, a passenger car driver of Thuan Thao Joint Stock Company, runs on Tuy Hoa - Ho Chi Minh City route for nearly 10 years shivers when recalls the times passing Ca pass. “When passing through the pass, the driver must concentrate to the maximum. The terrain is high, constantly sudden curving and out of sight so I am not only worried about my car but also worried about the vehicles in the opposite direction. We run on right speed, right lane is not absolutely safe. On the curves, if the opposite vehicles come over into our lane we will be hit immediately”- Lim driver said. Not to mention in the rainy season, landslides from mountains fall into the road. Many drivers run through the pass with the permanent fear, did not know when they were buried alive.

One day in the 90s of last century, the young student of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education Ho Minh Hoang visited his hometown, while passing through the pass, he witnessed a haunting accident. No one survived in that passenger car.

And then his ambition to drill through Ca mountain from then. Years after fulfilling the great ambition to successfully build a tunnel through Ca mountain, opening the door of trade for Phu Yen, Mr. Ho Minh Hoang, Chairman of Deo Ca Group still considered it a "compassionate road" and often reminded of that haunting “Mourning on cliffs”.

Open the door for thousand years aspiration

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has been directly inspecting and evaluating. Deo Ca tunnel is a national key project having great importance in connecting traffic. “I am very proud that this is a tunnel project by the Vietnamese people. The undertaking of a large complex project demonstrates the outstanding growth of domestic investors and contractors, especially technical staffs, engineers, construction supervisors, etc.”, The Prime Minister emphasized.

For Phu Yen people, they are more proud because this project was initiated and implemented by their native son. The tunnel through Ca mountain pass is of national stature, bringing great benefits in many fields. The project has eradicated the traffic accident black spots, avoided the pass road, ensured the defense and security work of the Central - Highlands region, saving fuel and time for vehicles when passing through the tunnel.

The tunnel through Ca pass is located between Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa provinces, the starting point at Km1353 + 150 Mational Road 1 in Phu Yen province, the ending point at Km1374 + 525 National Road 1 in Khanh Hoa province, the total length of 13.19km.

In which, Deo Ca tunnel is 4.125m long, Co Ma tunnel is 500m long, including two parallel tunnels, each tunnel has two lanes in the same direction to ensure exploitation speed of 80km/h. The operating of the tunnels has shortened the time to pass Ca Pass from 60 minutes to 10 minutes.
